Iraqi nielloware was introduced probably from Russian silversmiths in the late nineteenth century. A lot of it was made for the tourist market, but it was also made for domestic use. This ash tray is typical in design, the silver work is often slight crude, but the decoration is good quality. It is in good overall condition, a few small bumps.
